New Era Cap Company, based in Buffalo, New York, stands as an American headwear giant with a legacy dating back to 1920 when Ehrhardt Koch founded it with a modest investment. Originating as the “E. Koch Cap Company,” its early production facility was established on Genesee Street, Buffalo. With a humble beginning of 14 employees, including Ehrhardt’s sister Rose and his son Harold, the company rapidly expanded, producing 60,000 caps by the end of 1920.
A pivotal moment occurred in 1934 when New Era secured its first Major League Baseball (MLB) contract, marking the start of an enduring relationship with the Cleveland Indians. Innovations like the iconic 59Fifty cap, introduced by Harold Koch in 1954, further solidified New Era’s position. The company’s journey continued with exclusive MLB licensing in 1993 and subsequent ventures into the NFL, NBA, and international collaborations. Despite controversies, including a voluntary recall in 2007 due to perceived gang affiliations, New Era remains a prominent player in the sports headwear industry.
